VIENNA, VA, MARCH 28, 2017 – Allergy & Asthma Network, the leading nonprofit patient education and advocacy organization for people with asthma, allergies and related conditions, strongly opposes the Executive Order issued today by the White House suspending the Clean Power Plan, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule limiting carbon emissions from existing fossil fuel-generated power plants.
Carbon pollution from power plants, the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States, puts the health of our families and communities at risk. People with asthma and allergies are particularly sensitive to air pollutants and irritants caused by carbon pollution, as are children with still-developing lungs and older adults. Unhealthy air can trigger asthma flares and interfere with normal lung function.
The Clean Power Plan will reduce carbon pollution from power plants by 32 percent below 2005 levels. It has been estimated that an emissions reduction would prevent up to 90,000 asthma flares each year.
“Everyone deserves clean, breathable air,” says Tonya Winders, Allergy & Asthma Network President and CEO. “We will continue to advocate for policies that protect public health and ensure a safe environment for our families and communities across the nation.”
