Follow an Asthma Action Plan

An Asthma Action Plan helps patients manage symptoms daily and avoid emergencies. It should explain:

  • Daily medications
  • How to recognize worsening symptoms
  • What steps to take during an asthma attack
  • When to seek emergency care

Use Medications Correctly

Asthma medicines are typically in three categories:

  • Rescue/reliever medicines (used during symptoms for quick relief)
  • Controller medicines (typically taken daily to reduce airway inflammation)
  • Add-on therapies (for hard-to-control asthma)

When to See an Allergy and Asthma Specialist:

  • Have asthma symptoms more than TWO TIMES A WEEK
  • Use your quick relief inhaler more than TWO TIMES A WEEK
  • Awaken at night with asthma more than TWO TIMES A MONTH
  • Refill your quick relief inhaler more than TWO TIMES A YEAR
  • Use prednisone (pill, liquid, or shot) more than TWO TIMES A YEAR
