U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt announced plans to rescind the Clean Power Plan, the 2015 regulations designed to primarily limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. Pruitt states the regulation exceeds the EPA’s authority and is an unnecessary regulatory burden for the development of U.S. energy resources. Corporations and industry groups have also expressed concerns about meeting the emission targets in the plan due to steep costs and availability of technology.
Together with the American Lung Association and other health organizations, Allergy & Asthma Network opposes repealing the Clean Power Plan as it will result in unlimited carbon pollution and allow more particle pollution that causes asthma attacks, allergies, lung cancer and premature deaths. When the plan was announced, EPA estimated that it would prevent up to 90,000 asthma attacks in children and 3,600 premature deaths each year when fully implemented.

Here’s a statement from Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH), who serves as co-chair of Allergy & Asthma Network’s Congressional Asthma and Allergy Caucus: “As the founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Allergy and Asthma Caucus, one of my top priorities is to ensure that our kids and grandkids are breathing clean, healthy air. That’s why I supported the Clean Power Plan, which was projected to prevent an estimated 90,000 pediatric asthma attacks and 3,600 premature deaths each year once fully implemented.

“The Trump Administration proposal to roll back the Clean Power Plan threatens to harm both our environment and our kids’ lungs. Climate change is a public health crisis, and we must continue taking steps like the Clean Power Plan to contain its impact, instead of going backward and worsening the environmental threats our children will inherit.”
