FAIRFAX, VA – The following is a statement from Lynda Mitchell, CEO of Allergy & Asthma Network, in response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) March 12 announcement outlining 31 planned actions to roll back or reconsider key air pollution safeguards.
Allergy & Asthma Network advocates for more than 100 million Americans living with asthma, allergies, and immune disorders, all of whom are directly impacted by air quality standards nationwide.
The EPA’s unprecedented undertaking to roll back established air quality protections, developed through extensive public engagement and stakeholder input, has the potential to negatively impact progress we have made in clean air and clean energy initiatives.
We firmly support EPA’s fundamental mission of environmental stewardship through the implementation of laws and regulations that protect human health and the environment. These policies ensure access to clean air, land, and water for all Americans.
However, the proposals put forth by EPA, particularly the reconsideration of the 2009 Endangerment Finding – a landmark scientific determination affirming that six key greenhouse gases in the atmosphere endanger public health – establish a detrimental precedent.
Reversing the Endangerment Finding and the subsequent regulations that rely on this critical determination would signify a dangerous regression of scientific and public health advancements. These advancements have been instrumental in shaping policies that incentivize a necessary reduction in greenhouse gases and associated air pollutants, which are known triggers of respiratory illnesses.
Allergy & Asthma Network urges careful reconsideration of these proposed actions to ensure the health and well-being of people living with chronic respiratory conditions. We stand ready to work with the Administration to ensure the patient voice is centered in these decisions.
