Comorbidities in Type 2 Inflammation: Connecting Overlapping Conditions
Welcome to the latest Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Innovations podcast episode. This is the second episode in our four‐part series on Type 2 Inflammation. In this episode, we learn why having more than one immune‐related condition, like asthma, nasal polyps or eczema, can mean you have more severe symptoms.
This episode is produced in partnership with The Itch Podcast. Our co-hosts, Dr. Payel Gupta, MD, and Kortney, interview board-certified allergist Michael Blaiss, M.D., to talk about how many diseases are caused by Type 2 Inflammation. We discuss why knowing this is important so you can find the best treatment plan.

Why Type 2 inflammation affects so many diseases
When you have Type 2 inflammation, your immune system can cause several conditions at the same time. In this episode, we learn about Type 2-related conditions like chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), a runny nose (allergic rhinitis), asthma, eczema, itchy bumps (prurigo nodularis), eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and food allergies.
We also talk about the idea of comorbidity, which means having two or more diseases at the same time. Dr. Blaiss explains why this overlap is important to providing a comprehensive treatment plan.
Key takeaways from Comorbidities in Type 2 Inflammation
This episode shows how many common immune conditions come from one main problem in the body: Type 2 Inflammation.
- Type 2 inflammation is the shared root cause of multiple conditions. Many diseases, like asthma, eczema, and nasal polyps, come from Type 2 Inflammation.
- Multiple conditions may mean a more severe disease. Having more than one condition can mean the disease is more serious. When symptoms overlap, it can be harder to manage your health.
- Testing for inflammation. We discuss if there is a test that can help determine if you have Type 2 inflammation.
- Creating an overall treatment approach that targets Type 2 Inflammation. Treating the inflammation, rather than each condition separately, can help reduce many symptoms at once and lead to better outcomes.
- Early treatment helps prevent more problems. Starting treatment early is crucial. Prompt treatment may prevent further conditions.
