Fairfax, VA – Allergy & Asthma Network CEO Lynda Mitchell issued the following statement regarding current budget proposals, that include funding for federal asthma control programs:

The Allergy and Asthma Network is pleased that the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS) Subcommittee has included language in its fiscal year 2026 Appropriations Bill calling for $33.5 million in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Asthma Control Program (NACP). This funding empowers CDC to collaborate with states to enhance health outcomes for individuals living with asthma.

Asthma, a chronic disease affecting over 28 million Americans, including about 6 million children, has been significantly managed at the federal level through the NACP. Through its robust initiatives, the program has been instrumental in reducing emergency room visits, increasing public knowledge regarding asthma, and providing healthcare practitioners with essential tools and training for high-quality care delivery.

The NACP is a critical federal initiative that merits sustained and increased funding, as it has been a vital resource advancing public health initiatives for asthma for over 25 years. In addition to its own work, NACP has dedicated substantial funding and technical assistance to partners to develop interventions, scientifically evaluate their effectiveness, and translate them for widespread implementation across diverse communities. It currently funds 29 state asthma control programs and 4 non-governmental organizations to promote evidence-based asthma strategies through patient-oriented and clinician-oriented education and multisector partnerships.

Allergy and Asthma Network is also encouraged to see that the bill text called for the NACP to continue its efforts to develop public health interventions aimed at protecting people with asthma from wildfire smoke, in response to the increase of climate-related environmental events. Addressing these environmental factors is crucial for respiratory health.

We strongly urge Congress to approve the funding proposals and secure ongoing support for those dependent on the NACP’s vital resources.
