Allergy & Asthma Network Joins Call for Urgent Action on Climate Change

Fairfax, VA, May 22, 2025 – Allergy & Asthma Network joined more than two dozen public health, healthcare provider, patient advocacy and climate organizations in urging policy leaders to take swift actions to address the health impacts of climate change driven by pollution from fossil fuels.

Worsening wildfires, extreme heat, poor air quality, and longer allergy seasons are putting lives at risk, especially for people with asthma, allergies, and other chronic conditions. Climate change is a health emergency that is already harming health and causing loss of life. The window to prevent the worst impacts is rapidly closing.

For people living with severe respiratory conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD, climate change poses increased risk. With diminished air quality due to smog, wildfire smoke and particle pollution, asthma attacks and other severe lung conditions will rise. Rising global temperatures have also led to an earlier start of pollen season, which could lead to a rise in the prevalence of environmental allergies.

The 2025 Declaration on Climate Change and Health reaffirms Allergy & Asthma Network’s commitment to advance policies that reduce environmental hazards contributing to the rise in asthma and allergy prevalence. Recently, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) announced its plan to reverse a host of regulations on established air quality protections, developed through extensive public engagement. Here is our statement urging EPA to maintain the current regulations to help ensure a continuity of public health protections.

With this Declaration on Climate Change and Health, Allergy & Asthma Network calls decision makers at every level to protect America’s health by taking steps now to dramatically reduce pollution that drives climate change and harms health.
